Abstract
A brochure for NASA's "Teacher in Space" Program, describing the role of select Pennsylvania teachers as "Space Ambassadors".
In 1985, the U.S. government and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) chose the first teacher Christa McAuliffe of New Hampshire to go into space aboard the shuttle Challenger. Chosen from 581 applications as Pennsylvania's finalists in the teacher astronaut competition, Walt Tremer, of the Southern Lehigh School District, and Pat Palazzolo, of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, took part in extensive space workshops sponsored by NASA. These Pennsylvania teachers, who have been designated official NASA Space Ambassadors, are now available to conduct space educational programs for students, teachers and administrators. NASA State Ambassadors State finalists. as part of the Teacher in Space program, have been prepared to instruct and disseminate NASA materials related to present and future space projects. This preparation has included workshops in Washington and a future session at Cape Kennedy in Florida, while viewing the 51-L shuttle launch. The state space ambassadors have on hand an extensive kit complete with slides. videotapes of shuttle activities. computer software. and numerous publications and curriculum materials for use within educational systems. In addition, all ambassadors have been certified to receive and conduct activities using lunar samples.
