Massachusetts College of Art (MCA)

On July 27, 1959, the school officially became the Massachusetts College of Art. As is customary when a college changes its name or celebrates an anniversary, a new seal was designed. The seal is no longer used in printed form but is the official stamp of the Registrar. A few years later, the 1965 lettermark using the initials "MCA" was created. Although both of these marks appeared on many publications, they were not used on stationary.

A logotype was designed in Bill Hannon's Corporate Identity class. The logotype tried to capture the style of lettering on the entrance of the Longwood building, which was the main campus building at the time.

It was not until the presidency of Jack Nolan that the first identity systems for the college were developed. In 1970, Janet Longe, a student at MassArt, designed an abstract mark based on a painting by another student named Robert Moore. This was coined "Catch the Wave" mark, because it is constructed of two banner-like shapes.
