Massachusetts College of Art & Design (2007-2022)

In order to more accurately convey its breadth of concentrations, including graphic design, industrial design, and fashion design, the state changed the name of its art school to the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. The campus saw renovations in preparation for the opening of the Treehouse dorm in 2012, the Design and Media Center in 2016, and the MassArt Museum in 2020. The Treehouse dorm was influenced by Gustav Klimt’s 1909 Tree of Life painting, and it is a unique addition to Boston’s skyline. The Design and Media Center project transformed an underutilized gymnasium on campus into a new gateway to the campus, incorporating additional exhibition and studio space. The Art Museum opened in 2020 just weeks before being forced to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The museum features contemporary art and serves as a teaching museum for the school’s students and faculty. Like most schools across the country, Massachusetts College of Art and Design closed its campus to students during the 2020-2021 academic year. The campus community discovered new ways to teach, learn, and connect in spite of the global pandemic.
