The MassArt logo design has evolved over the years, often coinciding with the name changes of the college. In 1873, when the Massachusetts Normal Art School was first founded, the Massachusetts state shield was primarily used as the logo. The state shield as we know if was developed at the turn of the 20th century, with some modifications. Prior to this, many different state shields were used at the end of the 19th century.
