Description
-
Very large piece of a mother and child. Light orange colored paint applied to plaster. Mother appears to be sitting on a rock and is bent forward with her arms around her child. One arm of the woman is around her child, while the other is balancing her against the rock. Mother's head and child's head are together touching. Faces of both mother and child are detailed, as is the hair. Mother is wearing long, strapless dress. Great attention give to mother's toes.

Accrual Method
-
Other than some pinholing and a few abrasions on the back of the piece, this work seems to be in very good condition, especially for its age, as it is an early piece of MVWF. Name changed from 'Mother and Child' due to research from Judith Kerr 1986 thesis 'God Given Work'. Also changed date from 'unknown'. Could possibly be a second work passed down to 'H. Fuller' as there is some discrepency on the size, ranging from 8" to 12" tall as well as family inventory lists both HF and Danforth as owning piece. - Rachel 2021. Larger work(?) sent to Howard University's 1961 exhibition on the opening of New Vistas in American Art. Exhibition History: Permanent Collection Exhibition 1999
